About Kraljevica

KRALJEVICA (Porto Re in Italian), a town and a port in the Vinodol Channel, at the entrance in to the Gulf of Bakar. Situated in the centre of a cove which spreads from Cape Ostro and Fortica to the south-east in a total length of 600 m; the town has developed at the sea coast and on the slope below the main road.

Kraljevica is a more recent town in the region of Primorje; founded probably in the 15th century. From the end of the 18th century, when a connection to King Charles Road (Karlovac - Bakar - Rijeka) was laid up to the second half of the 19th century it was an important port and marine centre; already towards the end of the 17th century it had a shipyard, and in the second half of the 19th century it became the cradle of shipbuilding industry on the Adriatic. Parallelly it developed into a seaside resort, with villas and hotels. It is located on the main road (M2, E65) Rijeka - Zadar.
